About El Segundo

El Segundo is one of the smaller cities in the area around Los Angeles. This neighborhood is home to a population of less than 20,000 and has a relatively low population density: just over 3,000 residents per square mile. In 1911, the area that would become El Segundo built its second oil refinery. Shortly afterward, it took its name from the Spanish phrase meaning “the second.”

El Segundo lies on the Santa Monica Bay. Like most of the cities on the southern side of the Santa Monica Bay area, it is a part of the South Bay Cities Council of Governments. South Bay is a thriving area with several major employers, including the oil refineries, important players in the aerospace industry, the North American headquarters for Honda and Toyota, and the Port of Los Angeles. El Segundo in particular is known for being business friendly. In fact, the community won an Eddy award in 2006 for being the most business friendly city in Los Angeles.

Living in El Segundo

El Segundo was home to one of the first airports in the area, originally named the Los Angeles Municipal Airport when it was built in 1930. This airport would later become the Los Angeles International Airport, or LAX. Other local players in the aviation industry are the Space and Missile Systems Center and the Los Angeles Air Force Base. The Space and Missile Systems Center is a subsidiary of the United States Air Force that is charged with the development of missiles as well as the exploration of space – a task that was particularly important during the Cold War.

Today, one of their primary tasks is developing and maintaining the GPS system’s network of satellites. They also oversee the Navigation Information Service, a helpline that civilians can call if they have trouble with GPS. Members of the National Guard facilitate this service.

Like most coastal communities, El Segundo is home to a relatively affluent population. This community has a median income of around $85,000, which makes sense when you consider the community’s major sectors of employment. The largest employers in El Segundo include the Raytheon Space and Airborne Systems, Northrop Grumman, and the Boeing Satellite Development Center.

El Segundo has all the infrastructure typically found in the area’s cities. It has 3 public pools, two large turf fields, aka the Campus El Segundo Athletic Fields, and a parks and recreation staff that was the inspiration for the popular TV show: Parks and Recreation. El Segundo’s location on the coast means that it also includes a strip of oceanfront property and a beach.
