About Marina Del Rey

With a population of less than 10,000 people, this tiny seaside community is a fisherman’s paradise. Marina del Rey’s claim to fame is its marina. Designed to house an array of small crafts – over 5,000 at a time – Marina del Rey’s marina is the largest man made harbor in the world.

This area started out as a salt marsh that was a popular destination for duck hunters, but the area was not used for much else. In the late 1800s, landscapers began to envision a massive harbor in the area, but it would take 50 more years before the idea would come to fruition. Once the federal government stepped in and agreed to help fund the project, however, development would soon be underway. A few years later, the nearby railroads coupled with the newly built harbor would help to put Marina del Rey on the map as a hotbed of commerce.
